3 tips to kickstart your career

Sep. 2021

Let’s be honest, there will always be excuses to prevent us from putting our professional life first, and let’s face it, most of us tend to fall into the trap of procrastination, distractions, or spend too much time stressing about the future. Here are some tips that help address these threats.

Listen to feedback (and maybe write it down, too)

Feedback is the breakfast of champions

Feedback will always be a key catalyst for your growth. It’s indispensable. However, you need to recognize the difference between constructive, useful criticism, and just plain hatin’; the first being a strategic tool aimed at encouraging and pointing out ways to instill positive change, and the latter is, more or less, meant to undermine your abilities.

OK so, what can we do about this?

Focus on the type of input you need and ask for feedback in real-time following a meeting, project, or even an action or a behavior. Reflect, summarize, and then figure out what action plan is needed. And if you do a good job, no one will notice. Whatever happens, don’t take it personally. There’s a lot that we fail to see because we’re too focused on work, studies, or even personal matters. By introspecting, we realise that there is a lot to improve.

You always need to make sure that your targets and goals are being met. It’s YOUR job to deliver better performance and improve. That’s why you ought to ask questions regularly, listen actively, understand what needs addressing, and be brave enough to do it.

Another trick is to write it down.

Writing down things enables a higher level of thinking. In short, writing forces your brain to process information efficiently. Lastly, don't forget to say: Thanks for the feedback ! :)

Stay up to date with technologies in the market

The best way to predict the future is to invent it

Rapid technological advances are changing the world. And it’s going at an ever accelerating pace.

All you have to do is keep up with it. It’s not that simple. Most people like to stick to their comfort zone. Don’t be like them.

Be curious, be passionate about what you do, what you study, and don’t lose track of market trends. A good idea is to keep a list of resources to keep up with the latest trends and you won’t miss any opportunities.

Stay relevant to change and technological improvements. If not, you will fall behind, and ultimately might fail.

Talk to your network

Your network is your net worth.

Networking is crucial and allows you to learn more and share with people who share the same interests or work in your industry. It’s an opportunity to make connections and maybe discover new job opportunities. It can also allow you to meet the right mentor.

But… What if I am an introvert?

You cannot change that by snapping your fingers. But you can change the way you view the situation as a whole. Focus on the concrete nature, being how it will help you boost skills or knowledge needed in your career. I identify common interests and start from there. By motivating yourself with a higher purpose, your mindset will shift and you will become more effective and excited about building those relationships. Also.. side note
